OUR SUSTAINABILITY
STRATEGY

Our sustainability strategy

This year, Tiger Brands clarified its strategic commitment to promoting a Sustainable Future, the fourth pillar of the company's long-term growth strategy.

The Sustainable Future strategy reflects our approach to driving the company's societal value proposition by optimising our impact on the social and natural capital stocks on which we depend. As Africa's largest food company, we have prioritised the following three focus areas to optimise societal value:

  • Health and Nutrition: Enabling consumers to improve their health and well-being
  • Enhanced Livelihoods: Improving the livelihoods of thousands of people
  • Environmental Stewardship: Significantly reducing our environmental footprint

These are the three areas where we believe Tiger Brands meaningfully intervene through our business activities in contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and addressing some of the significant socio-economic and environmental challenges facing our markets. These focus areas are underpinned by a set of strategic anchors relating to: food safety and quality; occupational health, safety and security; ethical supply chain practices; and transparency, stakeholder responsiveness and partnerships. The strategy will ensure that we achieve our purpose – nourishing and nurturing more lives every day.

The strategy aligns our existing sustainability initiatives in the different functions and businesses, covering the sustainability of our products, improved efficiencies of our production facilities, focus on our employees and the communities where we operate, and our wider stakeholder community. Many initiatives are already in progress and delivering results, as is evident throughout this report. The remaining initiatives will be implemented over the next year, with baselines set for some, and stretched targets for each of the strategic objectives and associated commitments.

As part of the sustainability strategy, we also mapped the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to our operations and activities. The SDGs where we have the most impact, are shown earlier in the report. We are working closely with the National Business Initiative (NBI) in South Africa to identify the common SDGs across the agri-processing sector in South Africa for alignment and optimal impact.
